Inela Nogić

Inela Nogić

Inela Nogić (born 1976 in Sarajevo) became world-famous during the Siege of Sarajevo when she won the 1993 Miss Sarajevo beauty pageant, that was held in a basement due to constant sniper attacks from Serb militias. Along with the other contestants they held up a banner that read "Don't let them kill us". The pageant was documented as an amateur video by director Bill Carter, which was shown around the world. The fact that such a beauty pageant under such circumstances was held at all and images of Nogić and the contestants holding up the banner stirred viewers' emotions and added to the international pressure to end the siege. Footage of the documentary with her was incorporated into the single "Miss Sarajevo" by the Irish band U2 together with Brian Eno featuring Italian maestro Luciano Pavarotti. Nogić also featured on the cover of the single, taken during the pageant she won.

After the war ended, Nogić was invited to the 1997 concert given by U2 in Sarajevo and personally escorted by the band.
