John Grant Duncan-Hughes (
1 September 1882 –13 August 1962 ) was anAustralia n politician. Born inHigher Park, South Australia , he was educated at St Peters College inAdelaide , and then at theUniversity of Adelaide andCambridge University . He became a barrister in 1907, and served in the military 1915-1918. He wasaide-de-camp and secretary to the Governor-General before entering politics. In 1922, he was elected to theAustralian House of Representatives as the Liberal member for Boothby, defeating sitting Nationalist MP William Story. Duncan-Hughes and his fellow Liberals were running largely on a platform of opposition to Prime MinisterBilly Hughes . When Hughes resigned to make way forStanley Bruce as Prime Minister, the Liberal Party dissolved and its members joined the Nationalists. He held Boothby as a Nationalist until his defeat in 1928. After serving as aUnited Australia Party senator for South Australia from 1932 to 1938, Duncan-Hughes returned to the House in 1940 as theUnited Australia Party member for Wakefield. He was defeated in 1943 and became a lawyer.
