9/11 period where racial tension was risen, and the Bengali community was becoming more religious including the character "Karim". "Brick Lane" was somewhat well-received, earning a 65% favourable rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a rating of 65/100 on Metacritic. Roger Ebert and Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian gave this film a particularly good review,
The film had its first public screening at the Telluride film festival.
