Tom Newell is an American former professional
basketball coach.Attended the
University of Hawaii at Manoa from 1968 to 1971,after serving in the United States Navy ( [Pearl Harbor Submarine Base] )1966-68. He began his career working as a scout for theGolden State Warriors in the 80s. After serving as theIndiana Pacers ' Director of Player Personnel in 1984, he moved on to be an assistant coach for theSeattle SuperSonics (now inOklahoma City ). During the 1990s, he served as assistant coaches for theNew Jersey Nets , andDallas Mavericks . He also consulted to the Milwaukee Bucks and Denver Nuggets. In 1995, he became the head coach of the Greek professional teamIraklis and began his works on international programs. With extensive experience, he later joined the coaching staff of the short-livedWNBA teamPortland Fire . He is considered by FIBA as an Expert Instructor in their Basketball ODP to Third World countries( [Olympic Development Program] ), and has conducted coaching clinics, youth basketball camps and Officals training sessions in Korea, Taiwan, Philippines, Japan, St.Kitts and St. Vincent-Grenadines in the West Indies. Coach Newell was the former Japan Men's National Coach 2000. He also coached the Jilin Northeast Tigers in the Chinese Basketball Association ( [2007-08] ). He coordinated and directed the 11' Exposition Game in Seattle, Washington, June 2007. Currently, Coach Newell has provided free basketball camps and clinics for children and volunteer coaches in Seattle and Clackamas, Oregon.
