Helmut Hauptmann grew up in a working-class family in
Berlin . In the end phase ofWorld War II , he served as aLuftwaffenhelfer in Berlin and thrived in aPrisoner of war camp inSchleswig-Holstein . After theAbitur , he worked with theMagistrate of Greater Berlin. Since the beginning of the 1950's, he has lived as aliterary editor ,journalist and writer in Berlin.Helmut Hauptmann is a writer of
narrative works which reflect the ideological optimism of early East Germany as well asReportage s which processed the travel experience of authors in different countries in theEastern Bloc .Helmut Hauptmann was a member of the Schriftstellerverband of East Germany since 1956 and the P.E.N.-Zentrums of East Germany since 1972. He received the following awards: 1958
Erich Weinert Medal , 1960Heinrich Mann Prize , 1964 art prize of theFree German Trade Union Federation as well as the 1969Heinrich Heine Prize .Works
