In June 2006 Hulse was appointed fitness coach at Crystal Palace when Peter Taylor became manager. They had previously worked together with England Under-21. Hulse left Crystal Palace after working shortly with Neil Warnock in October 2007 and almost joined Bolton Wanderers under Sammy Lee, only for the deal to fall through when Lee was sacked.[2]

Hulse tried the Italian Way on request from Kevin Keegan, and put the Newcastle United players through two tough sessions a day in the build up towards the 2008-2009 season.[3]
In June 2009 Hulse left Newcastle United to join Liverpool in a similar position.[4]
