Set in a post-apocalyptic future in which most of Earth's water has disappeared and the rest is secured by the Protectorate, a para-military organization that governs the planet's new order, we find a group of children, mostly teenagers, living at one of many orphanages created by the Protectorate in order to indoctrinate new recruits into their service. The protagonists consist of Jason, the group's ad hoc leader played by
Jason Patric ; Terra, played byJami Gertz ; Tug, played byPeter DeLuise ; Rabbit, played byClaude Brooks ; Metron, played byJames Le Gros ; and a young deaf boy named Daniel, played byLukas Haas .The orphans play a rough sport which is a hybrid of lacrosse and rollerhockey, which unites them in a way that transcends the attempts to bring them to heel by the Protectorate.
While hiding in a cave, Daniel finds a mysterious orb which possesses special power. In reality, the orb is a sentient alien entity called Bohdai, who miraculously restores Daniel's hearing. The other kids quickly find he has unusual effects on them as well and his presence inspires them (Jason, in particular) to escape the orphanage in search of a more promising future. They escape from the orphanage (on skates) and try to cross the desert looking for a place they can live free while government stormtroopers and wasteland bounty hunters in close pursuit. They are later joined by fellow orphan, Darstar, played by
Adrian Pasdar . Unbeknownst to the children, the government's devious scientific branch desperately searches for Bohdai, bringing danger to anyone who possesses it.External links
