Rumination (mental)

Rumination (mental)

Rumination is contemplation or reflection on a particular topic. If very persistent or repetitively focused on problems, it is thought to play a role in the development of depression. In particular, individuals who tend to ruminate on negative themes (perhaps as an attempt to solve perceived problems), including potentially their own feelings of sadness or distress, may prolong negative emotions. This may in turn lead to a greater likelihood of developing depression. Conversely, individuals who become depressed also appear to engage in more rumination. This has lead to some discussion in the academic community whether rumination leads to depression, depression to rumination or both.
