Chrysanthos Filippides

Chrysanthos Filippides (Greek: Χρύσανθος Φιλιππίδης; also known as Harilaos Filippides (Χαρίλαος Φιλιππίδης)) (born 1881 in Gratini, Rhodope, Greece, died 1949, in Athens) was Archbishop of Athens, a theologian, religious hierarch and an academic.

In 1903 he became a deacon and began his service in the Metropolis of Trebizond (modern day Trabzon) as a teacher at the Secondary School of the city, where he taught religious classes.

He studied theology at the school of Halki then transferred to Lausanne in Switzerland and then to Leipzig in Germany. In 1913 he was elected as the Bishop of Trebizond in Pontus, He was involved with protecting the rights of the Pontian Greeks and the Armenians of the region and was therefore condemned to death by the Turkish forces in 1920.
