Korail . It connectsYeongju inNorth Gyeongsang Province withGangneung in Gangwon Province. From Yeongju, it crosses theTaebaek Mountains and reaches theSea of Japan (East Sea) at Donghae, thence proceeding north to Gangneung. Most of the line first opened in July 1955, with the Donghae-Gangneung portion completed in 1962.At Yeongju, the line connects with the Gyeongbuk and
Jungang Line s. Some trains travel directly from one to the other, so that it is possible to travel directly fromSeoul orBusan to Gangneung by rail.All sections of this line are electrified. The Heungjeon and Nahanjeong station,s where the only switchback is located, will soon be closed and a new spiral tunnel will replace this section.
