He and his wife were also married at the Falls. After serving nearly twenty years as Mayor of Niagara Falls, Thomson was defeated by Ted Salci in November 2003.
After the election, Thomson's campaign finances were subjected to a court ordered audit which revealed that he apparently violated the Ontario Municipal Elections Act by accepting an illegal donation from a charity, accepting a donation which exceeded the legal limit from a hotel, not properly issuing receipts to contributors, not properly recording or declaring donations of goods and services to his campaign, and by overspending.
Despite the audit's findings, Niagara Falls city council voted 5-3 against turning the compliance audit case over to the Crown Attorney.
Thomson ran and won election as a Niagara Falls alderman in November 2006, finishing 5th overall.
In June 2007, it was discovered that Thomson broke Ontario election rules for the second election in a row by accepting a donation from an American.
