Mykhajlo Rohoza

Mykhajlo Rohoza

Mykhajlo Rohoza was the later orthodox metropolitan of Kiev linked to Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople - now Istanbul - and the first metropolitan of the ruthenian byzantine church united with Rome in 1596. Since 1588 Metropolitan of Kiev, Rohoza subscribed with all bishops of the Ruthenian Church in 1594 a Decree soliciting an union with Catholic Church, conditioning this union of faith that byzantine rite, liturgical practices and canon law would be preserved. In 1595 Rohoza and all bishops solicited to Pope Clement VIII and Polish King Sigismund III a formal union. On 8 October 1596 a synod of Ruthenian bishops was convoked in Brest and the union with Rome was concluded. Rohoza was Metropolitan of Kiev up to 1599.
