Sanjay Mukherjee

Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee (born 1972) is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer. He works for the Government of Maharashtra. He has worked in several capacities in several departments of the Government.

Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee's most recent post was as the Collector (appointed head) of Nagpur district, which is located near the geographical centre of India. It has been during his tenure that the GDP of the district has more than doubled to more than 12 per cent. In Nagpur he is known as the man who has streamlined the process of land acquisition for the MIHAN project. The process, which began in 1994, had been mired by legal tangles. Once land was successfully acquired, the project, which aims to construct international Airport and multi-modal cargo hub, as well as set up a Special Economic Zone, began to be supported by large numbers of investors. He has been cited for being involved in the planning for the project. He is also known for completing the land acquisition of the Indira Sagar Project, commonly known as the Gosikhurd project. This project, initiated in 1986, finally saw the land acquisition and rehabilitation nearing completion.

Dr. Mukherjee is also credited with setting up the state's largest citizen's facilitation centre (CFC) at Nagpur. The CFC is a centre where an ordinary citizen gets the permits and certificates through a single window system within a definite time frame. He is also credited with setting up the first call centre among the collectorates of Maharashtra. The project, labeled Dial 1917: Citizen's Helpline allowed any citizen to obtain real-time information about various government procedures by telephone, instead of appearing in person.

Dr. Mukherjee was instrumental in framing the policy for development of power looms in Maharashtra. He also successfully revived ailing spinning mills in his stint as the Director of Textiles. He is credited with initiating the restructuring of the Maharashtra State Handloom Corporation.

Earlier, as Collector of Jalgaon, a water-scarce region in Northern Maharashtra, he initiated a massive program of water harvesting and conservation. This was named "Amche Shivar, Amcha Pani" (Our courtyard's water is ours) and evoked a massive response. The effort continues as a permanent feature in the district. As the Chief Executive Officer of the Zilla Parishad of Latur, he was credited with setting up the first computer-network-equipped Village Secretariat at Jod Jawda village in Latur Taluka.

Recently, Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee was appointed as the Chairman of the Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT). This is an agency which overlooks the development of Nagpur city, which is today one of the fastest growing cities of India. This puts him in charge of the goal to develop the city and the surrounding metropolitan area (totaling around 3500sq km [1]
