Louis Rhead

Louis Rhead

Louis John Rhead (1857-1926) was an artist who was born in North Staffordshire, England. His father George W. Rhead worked in the pottery industry as a gilder and art teacher. His brothers Frederick Alfred Rhead and George W. Rhead Jr were also artistic, and Louis sometimes collaborated with them, for example in book illustration projects. Louis was the uncle of the potters Charlotte Rhead and Frederick Hurten Rhead.

In his teens Rhead trained in France with Gustave Boulanger. He moved to the USA in 1883 and became a successful graphic designer, working in poster design (then still a new art form) and book illustration, eg illustrating the story of Robin Hood ["Bold Robin Hood and His Outlaw Band: Their Famous Exploits in Sherwood Forest" New York: Blue Ribbon Books, 1912.] .

Fishing

Rhead's interest in fly-fishing is reflected in his published work. He studied the insects of the USA, in particular those of the Catskills, and designed a range of flies.
