Harston railway station

Harston railway station

Harston was a railway station on the Hitchin-Cambridge Line, which served the village of Harston in Cambridgeshire. The station was a victim of the Beeching Axe, and it closed in 1963. However, the Hitchin-Cambridge Line, which formerly served the station, remains as a busy branch line connecting the East Coast Main Line to the West Anglia Main Line. This line going from London King's Cross via Hitchin is now more important than the former Great Eastern line to London Liverpool Street due to the new line built in the 1990s to Stansted Airport. It was realised that the G.E. line would no longer be able to cope with the extra traffic so more trains would have to go to London King's Cross, especially the non-stop expresses.
