.400 H&H Magnum is a modern rifle cartridge created for hunting large and dangerous game animals. Engineered by famous British gunmaker Holland & Holland it follows in their line of large bore calibers, following after the .700 Nitro Express; previous large bores were created in the late 19th century, using cordite or traditional black powder. It was introduced in 2003 in UK and Europe, and in 2008 in USA. It was arguably created in response to critiques of the .375 H&H Magnum as not being completely reliable (yet remaining very popular) against dangerous game, particularly Cape buffalo, elephant or charging lions. Due to the large choice of comparable safari calibers on the market and the high prices (aprox. US$200.00 or more per box in 2008), the demands remained low and select. For the same reason, outside the gunsmiths of Holland & Holland the only confirmed maker of rifles in 400 H&H Magnum is Mauser. Bullets are available from different manufacturers, mostly British, like Woodleight and Kynoch.

Almost simultaneous with 400 H&H Magnum, in 2003 Holland & Holland launched an even larger cartridge, the .465 H&H Magnum.
