Celestino Piatti

Celestino Piatti was a Swiss graphic artist, painter and book designer.

The son of a Ticino Steinhauers Zurich farmers and a daughter grew up in Dietlikon, visited 1937 from the Arts and Crafts School in Zurich and then completed a graphic teaching. Since 1948, he worked as a freelance graphic designer, from 1966 until his death in Basel and Duggingen.

First he achieved international success as a designer of posters. Of its more than 500 artists, many posters with prizes.

Especially Piatti made known his work for the Germans Taschenbuchverlag (dtv), whose books since the founding of the publishing house from 1961 until the mid-1990s, almost exclusively designed Piatti. In addition to the cover design, he was responsible for typography, Signet, letterheads, advertisements and posters responsible, so that a uniform corporate identity in a timely manner. The striking, white uniform dtv volumes with the characteristic illustrations Piattis apply as a milestone elegant and high-quality art book in your pocket book. Its design had until then mainly on the individual title related and could hardly be a brand awareness for the whole series Paperback agreement.

A total of 6300 created Piatti book covers, picture books and book illustrations, the current total number of copies of his books layout is over 200 million copies.In addition to posters and books, his works also include free prints (lithograph, woodcut and Linocut), stamps (those whose best known for the anniversary "100 Years Gotthardbahn" applies), glass pictures, murals and other paintings and ceramics and sculptures.

A motif that runs through his entire work, is the owl, for good luck or misfortune messenger, even as a symbol of wisdom raises a variety of associations. 1992 Piatti said in a magazine: You can draw a thousand times the owl, its secret is not to get up.
