As of 2008[update] it is led by the Hon. Wayne Mapp. For a list of previous ministers, see Minister of Defence.
A Defence Review was announced in April 2009 by the National-led government.[1]

Responsibilities
The Ministry is responsible for the following functions:
- Providing advice to the New Zealand Government on the Defence of New Zealand and its national interests,
- Acquisition of Military Equipment,
- Assessment and audit of the New Zealand Defence Force functions, duties and projects.
On a day to day basis the Secretary of Defence, (currently John McKinnon), holds the position of Chief Executive of the Ministry, and answers to the Minister.
