Mar Theophilus Training College owes its existence to the farsighted vision of the late Archbishop
Benedict Mar Gregorios ofTrivandrum . It is one of the Malankara Syrian Catholic colleges established and administered by theMetropolitan Archbishop ofTrivandrum , in accordance with the rights of the minority community guaranteed in the constitution of India.Moran Mor Baselios Cleemis Catholicos ,Major Archbishop ofTrivandrum is the patron to the college. Dr. Joseph Mar Thomas, Aux. Bishop of Trivandrum and Apostolic Visitator to North America and Europe, is the co-patron of the college. The college functions under the support of James Paravila and Samuel Kattukallil the Vicar Generals of the Archdiocese of Trivandrum.The college started functioning in1956 as an affiliated College to the university of Kerala on the Bethany Hills. Later the management identified a new site for the college and a full fledged college was constructed with the required infrastructure facilities. Prof. J.Y. Thampi Haris was the first Principal of the college for five years. Great personalities pioneered the history of this institution. Jose Mathew, George Mootheril, Stanislaus SIC, Susan Joseph, Mary Mathew Dr. Sbeeha SIC and Jose Konnath were served as principals. At present Dr. Mercykutty functions as the principal. As a teacher education institution the college offers B.Ed. Degree Course in English, Malayalam, Mathematics, Natural Science, Physical Science and Social Science.During the last 50 years of its existence, the college has set up a good library and other infrastructure facilities. In order to comply with the National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE) norms, the management started the construction of a new building on 30th June 1998 with all the modern physical infrastructure and other facilities like computer lab, psychology lab, educational technology lab, Science lab, work experience lab, language labs etc, to achieve the status of a center of excellence. With the inauguration of the new building and the labs on 1st March 2001, MTT college became the first college in the University of Kerala and in Kerala State with all the specifications set by the NCTE council. The NCTE expert team members visited the college and recorded their appreciation regarding the infrastructure and academic excellence of the college. The M. Ed. course was newly started in 2005 - 06. At present the college has 9 permanent faculty members.Source
