Travelling exhibition

Travelling exhibition

A travelling exhibition, also referred to as a "touring exhibition", is a type of exhibition that is available for circulation on a local, national or international level.

The whole collection of the exhibition, usually with additional services (for example insurance, shipping, storage, conservation, mounting, set up, etc.), can be entirely loaned to organizations for a fixed period of time.Using this method of display enhances public opportunities to access collections and it lengthens the life cycle of the exhibition. To have more than one location for the same exhibition is advantageous for the host organisations because in this way a grand part of the fixed -, and transaction costs can be reduced, as the host organisations divide these costs between themselves.
Hence it is frequently used by museums or galleries for a more efficient way of managing access to collections.Travelling exhibitions are usually supported by governmental organizations for the diffusion of knowledge and local cultures.

As the acknowledgement of the importance of travelling exhibitions, The International Council of Museums (ICOM) established the International Committee for Exhibition Exchange (ICEE) in 1983, as a forum for many different aspects of exhibitions development, circulation and exchange.
