Nearly two years later, Mercado was signed as a free agent with theSt. Louis Cardinals , onFebruary 2 , by|2005, only to be released before the season began. He caught on with theBridgeport Bluefish of the Atlantic League, and onJune 23 , 2005, Mercado was purchased from them by the Texas Rangers.
