"I'm Looking Through You" is a Lennon/McCartney song, written mainly by Paul McCartney, that first appeared on The Beatles' 1965 album "Rubber Soul".

It was written about Jane Asher, McCartney's girlfriend of five years, [Bob Spitz, "The Beatles", p. 588.] "You don't look different, but you have changed," the lyrics declare, reflecting his dissatisfaction with their relationship.

Recordings

The Beatles recorded three versions of the song in October and November, 1965. The last version was included on "Rubber Soul". The original version recorded on 24 October was slower than the released version, had a significantly different rhythm, and lacked the "Why, tell me why..." middle eighth of the final version. It was eventually released in 1996 on the Anthology 2 compilation. The stereo US version of the song contains a false guitar start.

If the mono version of this song on the US Capitol Versions Vol. 2 CD has this false guitar start, it indicates that it is from the first pressing of this set which erroneously substituted incorrect mono mixes; they were simply the channels of the stereo versions combined, rather than the original mono mixes.

* Country star Steve Earle included a version on his "Train a Comin'" album.
* Mark Heard covered the song on his album "Second Hand".
* The Wallflowers recorded a version of the song for the film "I Am Sam" whose soundtrack was composed entirely of contemporary Beatles covers.
* Ted Leo and the Pharmacists recorded a version of the song for the 2005 release of "This Bird Has Flown - A 40th Anniversary Tribute to the Beatles' Rubber Soul", an album composed of Beatles covers by various artists.
* The Muppets team performed a cover of the song for a special Halloween episode (guest starring Vincent Price) in season one of The Muppet Show.
* Folk guitarist Davey Graham covered this on his 1966 album entitled Midnight Man.
* The Punkles did a Punk cover of this song on their third album "Pistol".

Appearances
