Trimac Cichlid

Trimac cichlid, Amphilophus trimaculatus, is a three spot cichlid is a rarely found aquarium fish. They are often mistaken for low grade Flowerhorns.

Appearance

The Trimac is a large heavy bodied cichlid. It has a green or yellow hue base with the distinct spots on its sides. The male is much larger than the female growing up to 15" he has longer more pointed fins and a large red spot behind his gills. The female is smaller growing up 10 9-10" and a less dominant red spot. The male may also grow a nuchal hump when mature.

Distribution

Trimacs are found the western lowland rivers and lagoons of Central America, mostly in Mexico but found as south as Belize.

Care

Trimacs are a very territorial fish and demands a large aquarium and only other large aggressive tank mates. They prefer the water conditions of most other C.A. cichlids, high ph 8.0, and mid 70°'s to low 80°'s Fahrenheit.

Feeding

Feeding your Trimac is easy. They accept a wide variety of foods. It is best to not feed your aquarium fish "feeders" because of the risk of disease and infections. Instead vary their diets between foods like krill, blood worms, shrimp, beef heart, and use cichlid pellets/sticks as a staple for your fishes diet. It is scientifically designed to meet your fishes health requirements.
