The Most Incredible Thing (Danish: "Det Utroligste") is a fairy tale by the Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen from 1870. It was first published in an English translation before a publication in the original Danish; the tale appeared in the American "Riverside Magazine" in September 1870, in a translation by Horace Scudder, who translated the title as The Most Extraordinary Thing. The Danish version appeared in Denmark a month later. Plot
Whoever could do the most incredible thing would win half the kingdom and the hand of the princess in marriage. A man creates a magnificent hall clock with different lifelike figures appearing at each of the hours. The good creator is about to be awarded the prize, yet loses when a powerful man goes and smashes the wonderful clock up, an act of which gets labeled as something even more incredible. Thus, this villain is to wed the princess, yet at the wedding, the pieces of the clock magically reappear and defeat the villain. This gets called the most incredible thing, and the worthy winner receives his prize.
