José Carlos da Silva Peres Monteiro is a Portuguese plastic artist, born in Aveiro in the 29th of December of 1956.He was born a hundred meters away from the town's municipal art gallery, son of two Lisbon born citizens who came to Aveiro due to professional reasons. Jose Monteiro soon began to demonstrate a creative skill to build things in clay, plasticine, drawing, painting, sand sculpture and unlimited, yet ephemeral Lego constructions.
in the 60's, while enjoying the summer holidays in Albufeira, he had the opportunity to observe in first hand the Hippie's "flower power" culture, with all its beauty and ethical values (psychedelic posters, clothing, behavioral attitudes...). It kindled Monteiro's curiosity, attraction and passion.
A decade later, in Lisbon, José Monteiro decided to take up painting as a way of life, after seeing the works of Turner and Vieira da Silva in an exhibit in the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
