James Popil

James Michael Popil is a former provincial level politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1935 to 1948

Political career

Popil first ran for public office as a candidate for the Alberta Social Credit Party in the 1935 Alberta general election. He defeated incumbent cabinet minister Russel Love on ballot transfers to win his first term in office and pickup the Sturgeon electoral district.cite web|url=http://www.abheritage.ca/abpolitics/database/maps_choice.asp?Year=1935&Constit=Sturgeon|title=Sturgeon electoral district results 1935 general election.|publisher=Alberta Heritage Foundation|accessdate=2008-07-22] Sturgeon was abolished due to redistribution for the 1940 Alberta general election. Popil ran for a second term in office in the new Redwater electoral district.
