M1 (Johannesburg)

M1 (Johannesburg)

The M1 is a major north-south highway in Johannesburg, South Africa. It connects the city's southern suburbs through the central business district with Sandton, where the M1 merges with the Western Bypass (N1) and continues north towards Pretoria and Polokwane. It is also known as the De Villiers Graaff Highway. The section through central Johannesburg is a double-decker freeway.

Towards the south at the Crown Interchange, the M1 crosses the M2, which goes east-west across the city.

Congestion

The M1 highway typically experiences an extraordinary amount of traffic congestion as more than 300,000 commuters move daily between Pretoria and Johannesburg. While this is most prevalent during rush hour, many areas experience almost continuous congestion during daytime. The proposed Gautrain railway system aims to relieve some of the traffic on the M1.
