- Sokol (Metro)
Sokol ( _ru. Сокол, meaning "falcon") is the name of a
Moscow Metro station on theZamoskvoretskaya Line . The station opened on September 11th,1938 . Designed byK.N. Yakovlev ,V.G. Polikarpova , andV.M. Andreev , it features a single row of pillars which flare upward into the arched ceiling, separated by circularcoffer s. Sokol is finished in a variety of materials, including white and gray Koyelgamarble ,onyx ,granite , and white ceramictile . The two entrances to the station are located on both sides ofLeningradsky Prospekt . An additional exit to the underground passage is available from the south end of the platform. Another entrance was cut in 2003 from the nearby Metro Market shopping center. It was the terminal station between the time of its completion and beforeVoikovskaya was opened 26 years later. Depot of the same name serving entireZamoskvoretskaya Line is located near the station.The station is named after
dacha settlement Sokol that also gave name to the administrative unit of Moscow.On 19 March 2006, a section of tunnel between Sokol and the northern station collapsed and fell onto a metro train. It was reported that the accident was due to workers setting up an advertising billboard on the street above the tunnel. Despite a concrete slab piercing one of the carriages the accident did not cause any injuries [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4822440.stm] .
In May 2007, construction work began on CSKA Moscow's new stadium which is very close by.
