George Wareing Ormerod (
12 October 1810 –6 January 1891 ) was a British geologist.Ormerord was born at "The Damhouse",
Tyldesley, Lancashire , the second son of the antiquarian,George Ormerod (1785–1873), and his wife, Sarah, "née" Latham (1784–1860). He was educated at private schools and by a private tutor atHarborne , nearBirmingham , matriculated in 1829 atBrasenose College, Oxford , and graduated BA in 1833 and MA in 1836. He was admitted a solicitor in 1836 and practised inManchester until 1855. Ormerod became a fellow of theGeological Society of London in 1833, and studied theCheshire salt deposits, thePermian ofLancashire , and the drainage and subsidence ofChat Moss , publishing eight papers on these subjects between 1842 and 1853. He was a member of theManchester Literary and Philosophical Society , and became treasurer in 1854.In 1855, Ormerod moved to
Devon , where he spent the rest of his life. He practised inChagford until 1869, when he moved toTeignmouth . He continued his geological studies, publishing papers on the northern edge of theDartmoor granite, on minerals from theTrias , on fossils fromKent 's cavern, and on the geology of south Devon. Ormerod joined theDevonshire Association in 1862 and served on the council and as a local secretary. He published a classified index to the association's publications in 1886, and a similar index to the Geological Society's publications in 1858, with later supplements. In addition to his geological work, Ormerod published papers on prehistoric and later antiquities in Devon, and on local history, including the "Annals of the Teignmouth Cricket Club" (1888). Ormerod, who never married, died atBonnicliff , East Teignmouth.
