intl =Fluid Friction Comics is a
Hong Kong comic book based comic book company with subsidiary offices in the UK. Founded in 2006, their debut title "DevaShard" launches worldwide in July - August 2008.History
Fluid Friction was set up by its directors, Mr Simon Squibb, Ms Helen Griffiths and Mr Harsh Sabale in Hong Kong in October 2006 with the goal of producing top quality graphic novels featuring true artwork and in quality literature at an affordable price.
Their first series of titles will focus around ancient Asian mythology and presenting embellishments on these stories that are presented in a slick, attractive fashion, designed to appeal to the youth of today.
DevaShard
Fluid Friction's debut series "DevaShard" is inspired by the ancient Indian mythological text the Mahabharata and focuses around the life story of the character Karna. The synopsis reads:"Set in the epic world of Bhumi, "DevaShard" chronicles the life of a radiant son robbed of his birthright and plunged into a land gripped by darkness. In this world of magical beasts, mighty gods and cursed daemons, the hero must fight to become a fearsome warrior if he is to survive the evil threatening to extinguish him."
"DevaShard" will run for a total of 25 books, with each book being 52 pages long.
The first book in the series is "DevaShard: At First Light"
Bhumi
Bhumi is the world created by Fluid Friction in which DevaShard and the stories in other titles will take place. As with our own Earth, Bhumi contains many lands, each of which has different landscapes, individual weather patterns and its own wildlife. Of course each land is also populated by people and they each have their own appearance, history, culture, style and civilisations. Some parts of Bhumi are populated by older and darker creatures.
The various lands of Bhumi are: Im-Himna, Rhu-Nagah, Nysathor, Hylindra, Llindra, Aansai, Gandess, Uundan, Eathaar, Shyatha, Shya, Lisilt, Sundirral, Dahka, Umbrastra and Noctundra.
Hong Kong's First International Graphic Novel
"DevaShard: At First Light" is officially Hong Kong's first ever international graphic novel. Although HK has a strong local comics industry and has been producing comics for sale locally and regionally for over 40 years, prior to "DevaShard" no truly international comics or graphic novels had been produced within Hong Kong.
East Meets West
In addition to producing HK's first international graphic novel, Fluid Friction has another claim to comic book fame, which is that they have compiled the world's first mixed team of comic artists and writers from HK's local industry and artists and writers from the UK and US comic industries. DevaShard has been developed from first concept through to final production by this team who are split exactly 50/50 between far Eastern and Western industry professionals.
Cover Art
One of Fluid Friction's goals has been to showcase the art of some of the most famous and recognisable names in Western comic art in the East and to bring more awareness of their art form to the people's of Asia. As such the cover of their first book DevaShard: At First Light features the art of
Simon Bisley , whilst their second book "DevaShard: Dark Before Dawn" features a cover by Frank Cho.References
