Centre Market Place, New York

Centre Market Place is a one block long mew in downtown Manhattan, New York City, surrounded by some of the most famous NYC neighborhoods.

One block west is Mulberry Street (Manhattan) (the heart of Little Italy) to its south is Grand Street, the north border of Chinatown, to the north is Broome Street, the street that cuts through the heart SoHo – and where many actors including Heath Ledger [*http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heath_Ledger] , and to the west the NYC Police Building ( [1http://www.nyc-architecture.com/SOH/SOH036.htm] , 2 [http://newyorkdailyphoto.blogspot.com/2007/01/police-building.html] ) one of the most glamorous buildings in New York.

Most locals consider it part of NoLIta [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nolita] , a series of blocks known for cute little stores and fancy living. The block contains a rich New York City history.

It originally served as a support and backdrop to Centre Street that was competing with Broadway for the top street in Manhattan. CMP was a place where merchants, from tomato sellers to clothes pickers would hock their ware.

At the southern point of the street, at Grand Avenue, is O’Neal’s Bar. This bar is listed as one of the top 50 bars in NYC. It also become known for the bar created by "Sex and the City" fame ...It is a regular. [ [http://gonyc.about.com/od/photogalleries/l/bl_satc11.htm Go NYC] ]

The bar has a cavernous wine cellar that served as a drinking salon during Prohibition. Genlemen of means would walk through the front of the Police Building, perhaps make a contribution to the "widows and orphan fund" and then walk through the cellar corridor connecting the two buildings.

It once house the hand gun store, known as [John Jovino] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Jovino_Gun_Shop] , has been featured in "Serpico," "Mean Streets" and "The Brave One" as well known in artistic circles for its signature giant size handgun that serves as a billboard.

The block is only regarded as one of New York City's hidden alleways...
