Dr Lorenzo Savioli is a senior
United Nations civil servant and the director of the Department of Control ofNeglected Tropical Diseases at theWorld Health Organization Headquarters inGeneva ,Switzerland . [http://www.who.int/neglected_diseases/director/en/index.html]An Italian national, he holds a
medical doctor degree (1977 ), and two specializations (intropical medicine ,1979 and ininfectious diseases ,1985 ) from the University of Rome "La Sapienza". He further pursued his studies in theUnited Kingdom where he obtained aMaster's degree inmedical parasitology from theLondon School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and theDiploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from theRoyal College of Physicians .In
1979 he moved toZanzibar ,Tanzania where he worked as a clinician and later as the public health officer responsible for controllingschistosomiasis andsoil-transmitted helminthiasis onPemba island. In1991 he joined theUnited Nations and was assigned at theWorld Health Organization Headquarters inGeneva , where he lead the "Programme on Intestinal Parasitic Infections", the "Schistosomiasis and Intestinal Parasites Unit" and the "Parasitic Diseases and Vector Control Unit". In2005 he was appointed director of the newly-constituted "Department of Control ofNeglected Tropical Diseases ".The recipient of several awards and distinctions, Dr Savioli is a senior associate at the
Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and a Fellow of theIslamic Academy of Sciences .Notes
