Paruyr Hayrikyan

Paruyr Hayrikyan (also Paruir Airikian and some other transliterations) (born July 5, 1949) is an Armenian politician, former Soviet dissident. [http://www.persons.am/en/info.php?id=558 Paruyr Hayrikyan's bio] ] [ [http://www.aimusd.org/karuc/paheng.html "Paruyr Hayrikyan"] ]

In Soviet times, he was several times placed in penal labor camps for his activiies and eventually stripped of Soviet citizenship and exiled to Ethiopia after his accusation of Soviet leadership in the instigation of Sumgait pogroms of Armenian population. In 1990, after the pressure of American senators led by Bob Dole and Armenian Parliamen, Gorbachev restored Hayrikyan's citizenship and allowed him to return. After that, Hayrikyan has been taking an active part in the political life in Armenia
