John Wingfield

John Wingfield

Sir John Wingfield was the husband of Susan Bertie, countess of Kent and a courtier during the reign of Elizabeth I. He was connected to two formidable women - Bess of Hardwick was his aunt and Catherine Willoughby, Duchess of Suffolk was his mother-in-law. Catherine Willoughby had been rumoured to be about to replace Catherine Parr and become the seventh wife of Henry VIII; she also received a proposal from the King of Poland. Catherine, her daughter and John Wingfield himself were all great supports to the spread of Protestantism in England, believing that Elizabeth I was not pushing reform through quickly enough.
