“The Lost World” is a radio program from the American radio anthology series Radio Tales. The anthology series adapted classic works of American and world literature for the radio. The Radio Tales production of “The Lost World” was first broadcast via NPR on September 12, 2000 [National Public Radio: "NPR Quarterly Edition Summer 2000". NPR Marketing, July – Sept. 2000, Volume VI, No. III] . The program encompassed two half-hour installments that were distributed to NPR member stations as part of the NPR Playhouse cultural series. Opening narration

Plot Summary

The narrator of the story is a journalist who has volunteered to accompany an infamous professor on a journey deep within the Amazon, to prove the outrageous claims the professor has made that on a previous expedition he encountered prehistoric creatures there. Arriving at the outskirts of a plateau, and after making camp for the night, the journalist steals off alone (in the hopes of having a note-worthy exploit in the jungle that will impress the others and form the basis of a future newspaper article). Several adventures follow that night, including the sighting of a pterodactyl and several dinosaurs, the discovery of a tribe of cave-dwellers, and a stand-off with a T-Rex that results in a frantic chase, ending when the journalist falls into a pit. The deep trench is apparently a crude trap set by the cave-dwellers for catching passing beasts. Climbing out, the journalist returns to camp, only to discover that the camp has been hastily abandoned. The professor alone remains at camp; he knows where the others have been taken. The two quickly set off to find the rest of their party, who have been captured by the cave-dwellers. Driving them off with gun-fire, the professor and journalist rescue their friends. The entire party escapes the plateau and returns to civilization.
