nextanalytics is a privately held software publisher based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, founded in 2003 by Ward Yaternick.

Company History

The founder is Ward Yaternick. He managed the development of Cognos PowerPlay through the growth period of the 1990’s. After leaving Cognos in 1997, Ward founded OLAP@Work and built a product that brought the capabilities of SQL Server 7 and OLAP Services (the predecessor of Microsoft Analysis Services) to the Microsoft Office suite. OLAP@Work was so successful that the product was demonstrated by Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer during the global launch of Microsoft Office 2000. OLAP@Work was acquired by Business Objects in 2000. Ward Yaternick was given strategic roles for Analytic, Reporting and OLAP products. Returning to the life of an entrepreneur, Ward founded nextanalytics in 2003, the name being chosen simply because it was ‘next’ endeavor. Version 1 of the product was commercially available at the beginning of 2007. Version 3.0 was announced in March 2008, and Version 4 was announced in October 2008.

Products

nextanalytics is an analytics engine with a focus on the needs of Independent Software Vendors and Solution Providers.

The founder held the opinion that such software should be easy to embed into other applications. In the opinion of the founder, this meant that a product should not have a lot of extra footprint or a need to know technologies not directly related to delivery of analytics.

The nextanalytics software performs database or cube queries or reads data from local files.

Then it performs business analytic operations in memory with an optional proprietary disk cache in the background. The high-level scripting language has about 100 commands which perform various forms of data transformations, comparisons, trends, outliers and other related operations.

Once the analytic data procesing is complete, the analytic engine delivers results as individual or multiple tables back to the calling application.

There exists an open source user project with components written in C# and JSP at http://www.codeplex.com/nextanalyticsOS. This open source project contains a variety of calling applications which are, of course, open source.

Technology

The product is available for Java as well as the .NET platforms.

The product downloads in about 0.5 Meg.
