- Stuart Hill (sailor)
Stuart Alan Hill (born 1943) also known as Captain Calamity is an English amateur sailor, jurist and activist in the Shetland Islands independence movement.
Early life
Hill was born 1943 in Claydon in Suffolk, the son of a nuclear engineer.
His early career included driving a van and working as a construction worker in Bromley, Kent.
Attempt to circumnavigate the British Isles
Hill set sail from Manningtree, Essex in the first half of 2001, planning to sail his small 15 foot long open sailing boat single-handedly anti-clockwise around the British Isles to raise money for charity.
He earned the nickname "Captain Calamity" after various mishaps, including encountering difficulties off
Yarmouth losing radio contact with the shore and continuing on his voyage against the advice of his rescuers. The venture came to an end 50 miles off the west coast ofShetland , after the boat capsized in a storm and he was unable to right it. June 21 ,2008 , Hill, owner of a 2.5 acre island in Shetland calledForewick Holm (renamed Forvik Island) made a declaration of dependence, creating theCrown Dependency of Forvik . It was declared to be a Britishcrown dependency , and thus not a part of theUnited Kingdom or of theEuropean Union .
