Fr. Emmanuel Charles McCarthy is a priest of the Melkite Church of the Eastern/Byzantine Rite of the Roman Catholic Church. He is an educator and author. For the past forty years he has given lectures and retreats on the topic of Christian Nonviolence. His series Behold the Lamb is the best known resource on the topic of Gospel Nonviolence. Fr. McCarthy was a co-founder of Pax Christi-USA.
Fr. McCarthy's writings and work often draw support from the Jesuit theologian John L. McKenzie. Some of Fr. McCarthy's contemporaries include the scholar Walter Wink, Daniel Berrigan and Philip Berrigan. Other people who have spent their lives working for nonviolence include Gandhi, Dorothy Day of the Catholic Worker Movement, and George Zabelka. The author Leo Tolstoy discussed nonviolent themes in his work The Kingdom of God is Within You.
