Opening narration

Plot Summary

The story begins with the theft of a cup from the golden horde of a dragon, which reacts by terrorizing the countryside in revenge. At this time, Beowulf is king of the Geats, and upon hearing of the dragon he gathers his men and sets off to face the dragon in battle. During the journey he cheers his companions with stories of his great deeds of youth, including a night battling monsters on the open sea as he swam with a sword in hand. Another tale relates the plight of the former king of the Geats, who had turned to Beowulf for help in defeating a gruesome beast known as Grendel. Beowulf, as the strongest of all warriors, defeated Grendel and earned the respect of the Geats, who he would later rule as king. After these tales are told, Beowulf and his men reach the dragon’s lair, but only young Wiglaf is brave enough to stand with Beowulf and support him during the battle. The dragon is slain, but Beowulf is also mortally wounded. He names Wiglaf as his heir before he dies.
