William Hayes (organist)

William Hayes (organist)

William Hayes (Hanbury, Worcestershire, December 1706 - Oxford July 27, 1777) was an English organist at Magdalen College, Oxford. Father of Philip Hayes (organist) who succeeded him at Magdalen College. ["The Biographical Dictionary of Musicians", Blue Ribbon Books, Garden City, New York. (Original Editor Rupert Hughes)]

He composed a harpsichord concerto in G major in the 1730s, which was apparently very popular in Oxford, so much so that it was revised for performance on 1791-05-18 for a benefit concert that Joseph Haydn was supposed to attend, but missed. ["Haydn in Oxford", BBC Radio 3, in which the concerto is played by Trevor Pinnock and The English Concert.]
