BUET is a Department ofBangladesh University of Engineering and Technology . It offers both Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses.History
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering, the first department of its kind {Citation Needed}, was established in 1982. At the beginning, the department offered only graduate courses and degrees in Computer Science and Engineering. The Undergraduate program started in 1986. At first, 30 students were admitted each year for pursuing the B.Sc. Engineering degree.
Location
The Department is currently located at the Electrical Wing of the EME Building. A TK. 32 Crore (approximately 5 million USD) project to build a new 12 storied building to house the department is on the way. After completion, the Faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering i.e. the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering will move to the new building. The construction of the new building is underway at West Plassey adjacent to the BUET main campus and is expected to be completed by 2008.
Head of the Department
Head of the department functions as the administrative top position of the department. Usually, a Professor of the Department is selected for a two years term. Dr. Kaykobad served as the head of the department. Current Head of the Department is Dr. Md. Saidur Rahman.
Laboratories
At present there are seven different laboratories in the department premises. These are described here.
Microcomputer Laboratory
This laboratory has 40 Pentium IV workstations and three servers. All workstations are provided with windows XP and Linux platforms. This lab is primarily used for undergraduate lab classes
oftware Engineering Laboratory
Equipped with 36 Pentium-III high performance workstations with complete multimedia support. There is a HP Net P3 Dual Processor Server. This lab is primarily used for undergraduate lab classes.
Networking Laboratory
This laboratory provides with various networking devices. Equipped with Cisco routers, Cisco Switches and thirty two Pentium-III workstations.
Digital Laboratory & Interfacing Laboratory
These laboratories are equipped with modern tools to design and implement digital circuits. These laboratories have vast number of ICs in stock, starting from simple 74 series chips up to different types of microprocessors and their peripherals. There are various Microprocessor Trainer Kit such as 8088 based MTS 88.C micro-kit.
Multimedia Laboratory
Equipped with 40 Pentium-IV high performance workstations with multimedia support. This laboratory has a Pentium-III 1GHz Dual Processor 2000 Server. There are Flat-bed Scanner, HP Heavy Duty Laser Printer, Digital Video Camera, Video Capture card etc.
Computing Laboratory
Equipped with 40 Pentium-IV high performance workstations with complete multimedia support.

The department offers several consultation services to different government and private organizations. Primary field of cunsaltancy is the computerization. These services include feasibility study (both technical and financial), machine & peripheral specification and supervision of their proper installation, system analysis, software development, course curriculum development etc.
The department first computerized the computation of result of the Secondary School Certificate Exam in 1994.
Alumni
Its alumni include many successful engineers and alumni includes Engineers at international organizations such as Microsoft and academic positions in many Bangladeshi and US Universities.
