James Coulter is a private equity and co-founder of TPG Capital, originally known as the Texas Pacific Group.

Overview

In 1992, Coulter founded the Fort Worth and San Francisco-based private equity firm, which as of 2007was ranked the fifth largest globally with over $23.5 billion of assets under management. Bass. Coulter joined the Robert M. Bass Group from Lehman Brothers Kuhn Loeb.

Coulter has been involved in some of the largest leveraged buyout transactions on record including TPG's marquee transaction, the takeover of Continental Airlines in 1993. Coulter graduated summa cum laude graduate from Dartmouth College, where he was also Phi Beta Kappa. He subsequently received his MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1986, where he was named an Arjay Miller Scholar.
