Ljusterö is an
island inSweden .It is in the northern part of the
Stockholm archipelago inÖsteråker Municipality ,Stockholm County . It is approximately 65 kilometers outside of central Stockholm. With an area of 62 km², it is the 17th largest island in the country.
The island is accessed from the mainland by regular
ferries toÖstanå as well as byboat to centralStockholm .It has approximately 1,500 permanent residents and 25,000-30,000 residents during the summer season due to the large number of summer houses.
Administrative History
Ljusterö was originally its own municipality until 1967, when it became part of
Österåker Municipality . In 1974, all ofÖsteråker Municipality became part ofVaxholm Municipality , but since 1983, Ljusterö has been part of the newÖsteråker Municipality .Ljusterö windfarm project
Ljusterö is the site of a proposed project to install
wind turbines to generaterenewable energy for the island's residents and for the general population. The project proposes 23 turbines with a total of twomegawatts ofelectrical power output.History
One private wind turbine with 0.8
megawatt power output was installed during 2006 and another turbine with a twomegawatt power output has been approved by theÖsteråker Municipality on the same property, to be installed during 2009.However, the other 23 turbines have not yet been approved by the government agency dealing with permanent industrial installations.
Project organization
The proposed turbines would be on private land with the offer for anyone to buy a limited number of wind power shares within a separate economic organization.
The turbines will be the property of a stock
corporation , the company Kraftö AB, that rents the land required for each windpower installation from the land owners. The individual contracts with the landowners cover the next 20 years with a guaranteed yearly income for the land owners independent of the actual produced electric power.Community Debate
The project has been critized by some summer residents and permanent residents for affecting the archipelago's environment and views, making the island "look like an industrial power plant" and also making the real estate close to the wind turbines drop in value.Fact|date=August 2008
