Founded in 1977, the Western Association of Educational Opportunity Personnel (WESTOP) is a regional professional development and advocacy association founded with the interest of "furthering access to educational opportunities for economically and educationally disadvantaged persons and persons with disabilities." US Department of Education ) to train and organize the professionals of these programs, and to advance policies at a local and national level in the interests of educational equity. WESTOP represents the professionals and programs of four states (Arizona ,California ,Hawaii ,Nevada ), along with the U.S. Territories and the Federated States of the Pacific.Current membership of the association primarily represents personnel affiliated or in the direct employ of TRIO programs; however, many members are employees of other academic preparation/assistance/persistence programs such as MESA, EOP,
AVID , and GEAR-UP, and represent a wide array of education professionals fromK-12 and all systems of post-secondary education.References
