Association football is one of the most popular sports in the Caribbean state of Trinidad and Tobago. While it has traditionally lagged behind cricket in general participation and spectating, interest in the sport has been growing rapidly in recent years - boosted by the Trinidad and Tobago national football team's appearance at the 2006 World Cup.
National Team
In recent years the national team have been the most sucsessfull in the Caribbean Football Union. They have won the CFU-run Caribbean Cup eight times since it was founded in 1990, more than all the other winners put together. Their closest competitors in the Caribbean are Jamaica with whom they enjoy a healthy rivalry.
Domestic football
The highest level of football in Trinidad and Tobago is the TT Pro League which turned semi-professional in 1996 and fully professional in 1999 (a reflection of the growing support for the sport on the islands). The league consists of 10 teams, the most sucsesfull of whom have been Defence Force.
Continental Competition
T & T are members of CONCACAF the North American federation. Their teams have comepted in the CONCACAF Champions League and have reached the final on a number of occasions, and also won it. They also compete in regional Carribean comeitions staged by the Caribbean Football Union.
Jack Warner, the President of CONCACAF and a Vice-President of FIFA is from Trinidad and Tobago where he part-owns one of the leading clubs Joe Public FC.
