Wengerites

Wengerites

The Wengerites were an offshoot of the River Brethren . They broke with the other River Brethren in 1836 over issues of closed communion and meetinghouses. They were lead by John Wenger which is how they got threir name. Originally they used the name Bretheren in Christ and then changed it to Pentecostal Brethren in Christ.

The Wengerites began in Montgomery County, Ohio. The church peaked at 15 congregations. In 1861 John Swank lead a breakaway group that formed the Swankites.

The last members of the Pentacostal Brethren in Christ left that church and joined the Pilgrim Holiness Church in 1924.
