Sir Oswald Cheung

,known as the "doyen of the bar".

Biography

"Ossie" was the first ethnic Chinese to become a barrister in colonial Hong Kong, and the first Chinese chairman of the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club. Cheung was mentor to a number of eminent lawyers, including Audrey Eu and Margaret Ng

Cheung was educated at the Diocesan Boys' School in Hong Kong, and then graduated from the University of Hong Kong in mathematics and chemistry. During the Pacific war, he aided the British surveillance effort over the Japanese. After the war ended, he received a scholarship to attend Oxford University and subsequently entered Lincoln's Inn.

1951年在香港獲取大律師執業資格。1965年成為御用大律師,1952年擔任香港大律師公會義務秘書,並在1966年擔任公會主席,1996年成為香港大律師公會永久會員。

Personal

An avid cigar aficionado, Cheung received burns when his silk pyjamas caught fire as he attempted to light a cigar. He died of complications on 10 December 2003.
