Zhang Xiangtong

Zhang Xiangtong (Chinese: 张香桐; November 27, 1907 - November 11, 2007) was a renowned neurophysiologist of China and an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Zhang was regarded as one of founders of China's neuroscience. He helped found Shanghai Institute of Brain Research of CAS (later Institute of Neuroscience of CAS).

Zhang was born in Zhengding, Hebei Province. He graduated from the department of physiology of Peking University in 1933, and obtained a doctor of philosophy from Yale University in the United States in 1946. From 1948 to 1952, Zhang was an assistant professor at Yale medical school. From 1952 to 1956, Zhang was an associate researcher at Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research. From 1957 to 1980, Zhang was a research fellow at Shanghai Institute of Physiology of CAS. From 1980, he became the director of Shanghai Institute of Brain Research of CAS. Zhang retired in 1984, and had since remained the honorary director of the Institute.
