Palaearctic butterfly of theNymphalidae family.It has a wide range including the FrenchAlps ,Germany ,Balkans ,Apennines ,Asia Minor , theUrals ,Caucasus andSajan .In Britain it occurs in certaincoast al areas of easternScotland such asFowlsheugh .In Europe and Russia it is a forest edge butterfly found up to 2,400m m. and flying June to August.The hibernating larva is reported to feed onAgrostis ,Dactylis ,Poa and other grasses.Taxonomy
The Europe subspecies is the nominate "aethiops".The Caucasus subspecies is "melusina" Herrich-Schaffer, [1847] .
