Serial art

Serial Art is associated with Minimalist sculptors, where uniform elements or objects were assembled in accordance with strict modular principles. Brancusi’s sculpture "Endless Column" is an early example which inspired the modular work of Tony Smith, Carl Andre, Sol LeWitt and Donald Judd, among others.

Sol LeWitt wrote that “the serial artist does not attempt to produce a beautiful or mysterious object but functions merely as a clerk cataloguing the results of his premise.” [Hunter, Sam and John Jacobus. P 326.] The serial or modular premise allows for the construction finished artwork whose outcome is known beforehand. It is a form of systems art that follows a rational compositional process.
